To put it to the ultimate test, my colleague Dylan and I hit “out of office,” packed our bags, and headed to Edale, a landscape famous for its shifting terrain and rolling hills. Slightly overcast skies left the ground damp, adding just enough challenge to really see how Roam would perform.

I approached the run as a road runner, curious to see how the shoes would handle the shift from smooth pavement to uneven ground. Meanwhile, Dylan was a complete running beginner, experiencing both the shoes and running itself for the first time. That contrast gave us a clear perspective on how Roam supports runners of very different levels.

First Impressions

I went for the Roam in Vintage/Ballad Blue. Normally, I only wear black shoes, so this was a bit out of character for me, but I couldn’t resist the fun, vibrant colours. Dylan chose the men’s Roam in Magnet/Burnt Brick, and he immediately loved the pop of red on the sole and tongue.

We were both so eager to get them on our feet, not just because it was windy and cold, but because we were genuinely excited to see how they’d handle the mix of terrain waiting for us in Edale. We had carefully chosen a 5km route with not too many rocky sections, something that felt manageable for a first trail run while still giving us a proper taste of different surfaces. Straight out of the box, we were already testing them, bouncing around to get a feel for the cushioning, knowing we’d soon be taking them across gravel, dirt, and slightly wet trails.

We immediately noticed how light they felt. As a road runner, I was a little unsure how something so light would perform, especially after wearing trail shoes that in comparison felt heavy and clunky. But those concerns quickly faded, the shoes felt nimble, responsive, and surprisingly supportive.

It’s the little things that make a difference. We both loved the laces holder, there’s nothing worse than having to stop mid run to tie your laces, so this felt like a small but important detail, especially with uneven ground ahead. The sleek, modern design avoids the bulk of traditional trail shoes, and paired with the fun colours, it really captured that sense of freedom and adventure before we’d even set off.

On The Trail

Once we did a quick stretch to warm up, we set out on our adventure. We were keen to get going since we only had a small window before the rain was forecast. We started on a gravel trail that quickly led onto a road, and the transition felt smooth and natural without needing to think twice about our footing.

The road soon gave way to dirt paths as the trail started to climb and wind alongside a stream. It was the kind of route that’s ideal for a first trail run, not too long, clearly marked, and varied enough to keep things interesting. For anyone new to trail running, I’d definitely recommend starting somewhere similar, around 5 to 7km, and focusing more on enjoying it than worrying about pace.

As the terrain changed, we naturally adjusted. Instead of trying to keep up a road running pace, we focused on lifting our feet a little more, looking ahead to pick our lines, and taking things steady. When we hit steeper or more technical sections, we slowed down and walked where needed, which actually made the whole experience feel more relaxed and enjoyable.

After a couple of stops to take in the views, (and for me to wait for Dylan)  we reached a rocky, steeper section. You could see the fear in Dylan’s eyes at first, but it didn’t last long. The grip from the 3mm high abrasion lugs really came through here, and we were able to move across the uneven ground with confidence.

By the end of it, it felt less about “getting through” the run and more about enjoying being out there, which is exactly what trail running should be about.

What's It Like As A First-Time Runner

From Dylan’s perspective, it was all about trying something completely new. Within minutes of getting started, I could see a smile appear as he began to settle in. He said the shoes felt comfortable straight away, and the cushioning made the uneven ground feel much easier to handle.

He liked that the shoes felt supportive enough to give him confidence without overthinking it. The grip held up really well on the slightly wet trail sections, which helped him relax into the run. Before long, he’d found a natural rhythm and was moving with ease, which is exactly what you want when you’re heading out on the trails for the first time.
